How It Started

A Prototype on the Kitchen Table

Our journey began in 2021 with a simple question: what if building blocks could do more than build? Mark spent years on the answer; tinkering in his workshop, wiring batteries and circuit boards, smelting copper, drilling, sawing and molding plastic parts, looking for the perfect way to make components connect and interact. Prototype after prototype, he slowly got closer until the design finally “clicked” into something genuinely fun to build with and SparkBlocks was born.

Holden joined Mark in 2024 and together they obsessed over the details, refined the system, and figured out how to bring this invention to the world. In 2025, we launched on Kickstarter and the overwhelming response told us we had something that others had been waiting for so we hit the ground running and are still building today!

How we built it

Small design, big achievement

Putting electronics in a toy is easy. Putting them inside a brick that a seven-year-old can safely snap onto powered electronics in any order is not.

  1. Gold-Plated Contacts

    Power moves top to bottom through the same stud and tube geometry builders already trust. Stack a block, close a circuit.

  2. Conductive Studs

    These spring-loaded pins allowed us to send reliable conductivity through the plastic parts without degrading when clicked together.

  3. Circuit board

    Every SparkBlock carries its own printed circuit board, populated with real components. The electronics are not a metaphor.

  4. Clamshell housing

    Sizing this to snap together perfectly required us to remake this in .01mm steps.
