What kids learn

A clear path through the science.

State and provincial addenda explain local connections, added tasks, and the evidence to collect.

SparkBlocks provides focused, hands-on learning in electricity, energy systems and engineering design.

The learning approach

1Predict & build

Start with a question. Make a prediction, then connect the parts to test it.

2Change & observe

Open a switch. Cover a sensor. Reverse a motor. Notice what changes and what stays the same.

3Explain & improve

Draw the system, discuss the evidence, and use what you learned to improve a design.

Planning your class

Make room for the investigation.

One kit.
Plenty to Investigate.

What do I put on each table?

Plan one Intro Kit per pair, the student workbook pages, and pencils. Check the lesson’s materials list for everyday supplies such as paper, test materials, or a light source.

Charge batteries before class and check the parts. Some lessons offer optional Expansion Kit enrichment; some design discussions use only paper and pencil.

How do I fit it into the timetable?

Most lessons list 45–60 minutes, with some shorter discussions. Follow the unit order when ideas depend on earlier investigations. For rotations, keep the same question and evidence prompt for each pair.

Do students need to code or solder?

These investigations use circuit blocks that connect through conductive studs. Students operate switches, change connections, and test outputs without writing code or soldering.

What support comes with each lesson?

The curriculum includes teaching prompts, investigations, student recording pages, and assessment checks. Lessons build toward explanations and design tasks, with students drawing systems, comparing results, and reflecting on what changed.

What does the Classroom Kit provide?

The Smart Classroom Kit groups ten Intro Kits for about 20 students working in pairs. For current contents and ordering details, see the Classroom Kit page.
