The hands-on lab

Snap together your first working circuit in five minutes flat.

How it works

Every electronic component (battery, LED, motor, switch, sensor) lives inside a standard brick-compatible block. Snap blocks together and the circuit closes; pull them apart and it opens. The bricks do the wiring. No breadboards, no jumper wires, no soldering iron, no smoke.

What's in the box
  • 1× USB-C Power Block
  • 2× High-torque Motors (N20 gearbox motors)
  • 2× LED Blocks (Red + Green, 1×2)
  • 2× LED Blocks (White, 1×3)
  • 1× Remote Control Block + Remote
  • 8× Resistors (1×3 & 1×4; 1K–100K)
  • 8× Capacitors (1×3 & 1×4; 100nF–100uF)
  • 4× Transistors (2 NPN, 2 PNP)
  • 1× Slide Switch

Ages & difficulty

Designed for ages 8 and up, with a sweet spot for curious 8–12 year olds. Word-free assembly diagrams mean younger builders can work independently; a 24-page written Learning Guide gives older builders the deeper "why" behind every circuit. Available in English, French, and Spanish.

LEGO compatibility

SparkBlocks click directly onto LEGO bricks and all major compatible brick brands. You can integrate our circuit blocks into your existing creations; no adapters or special baseplates required.

Why no soldering

Soldering is great for production circuits. It's terrible for learning. When a connection won't work, learners need to see why. Because every component lives inside a block, a circuit either snaps together cleanly or it doesn't, and the failure point is right there in your hands.

"Screen Free Learning, compact and affordable"

We just got our Spark Blocks kit and just was so worth it. Our almost 7 year old was self motivated to start building the second he opened the box. no bribing required.

Frequently asked

Do I need the Intro Kit first?

The Expansion Kit is an add-on. Its components click into the circuits you build with the Intro Kit. If you don't own the Intro Kit yet, the Advanced Bundle includes both kits in one box and saves you money.

Why would someone want the Expansion Kit?

The Intro to Circuits Kit teaches how circuits work: press a button, a light comes on. The Expansion Kit is what turns those circuits into machines. It adds the parts that make a circuit think (resistors, capacitors and transistors for real logic and timing), the parts that make it move (two high-torque gearbox motors plus a remote control block), and 200+ extra bricks, roughly ten times what comes in the Intro Kit. Four new guided builds come with it, including the Clean Up Bot and a Night Light Castle that actually works.

What ages is it for?

SparkBlocks are designed for ages 8 and up, with a sweet spot around 8-12 years old.

Younger builders (5-7) usually need a parent alongside them, though the picture-only instructions mean no reading is required. Older kids and adults enjoy them too.

Is the battery safe? How is it charged?

Yes. The Power Block is a sealed, circuit-protected USB-C rechargeable unit. It uses the same chemistry as a phone, with overcurrent and short-circuit protection built in. Charges with any USB-C cable.

Can my child break anything by connecting blocks incorrectly?

No. If blocks are connected the wrong way, the circuit simply won't work. Nothing gets damaged, and there's no safety risk.

SparkBlocks are designed for hands-on experimentation.

Do I need an app, computer, or Wi-Fi?

No. SparkBlocks are 100% screen-free. There's no WiFi, no Bluetooth, and no app required. Everything works right out of the box with a printed Learning Guide.

Are translated learning guides available?

Yes, we have some translations and are working on even more. English ships in the box; French, Spanish, and other Learning Guides are free downloads. Translated versions of the Assembly Instructions are also available on request.

How is it different from Snap Circuits?

Snap Circuits are great for following a set instruction book, but once you finish, there's not much else to build. SparkBlocks work with the LEGO-style bricks your kids already own, so the building never stops. Every block is also labeled with real engineering symbols, teaching actual circuit fundamentals.

Why does it cost more than other toys?

SparkBlocks aren't a typical STEM toy you use once and shelve. The Intro Kit includes real electronic components (rechargeable battery, motor, LEDs, speaker, switches) plus building bricks, with a printed Learning Guide, and instructions for 6 themed builds. That's a lot of kit, and a lot of teaching, in one box.

Also, because every block works with the LEGO-style bricks your family already has, one kit powers unlimited creations. There's no instruction book to "finish" and nothing to throw away. Many families tell us their kids come back to SparkBlocks for months, which is rare for a STEM kit at any price!

Add-on Theme Kits

Once the Intro Kit is up and running, Theme Kits give the same components new shapes to live in. A walking ant, a fire truck, a patrol car, a windmill.

Great concept, Ok projects but very unreliable

The concept is great. The projects are ok. But the implementation is pretty poor. The main issue is that the electrical connection between blocks is very inconsistent. Even if you line brick up exactly and have a snug fit, it frequently fails to make an reliable electrical connection. And if you have a somewhat misaligned fit between blocks, then the electrical connection won't work at all. If your project doesn't work, you never know whether you built the circuit wrong or one of the pins&pads failed to make a good connection.

There are also a few of the pogo pins that fail altogether right out of the box. See pic below. The pogo pin on the right will not extend, even with a gentle pull with pliers. Several other pogo pins came similarly jammed, but were loosened with a gentle pull from the pliers.

I once did a large project with these pogo pins and gold plated pads. It worked wonderfully in the lab. But in the real world with dust particles, smudges on the pads and slightly misaligned mechanics, it was extremely unreliable and the project was a complete disaster.

Frank, thank you for the detailed feedback - and the photo. A spring pin that won’t extend properly is not normal, and we’d like to replace any parts showing that issue!

You’re also right that the electrical connection depends on good contact between the pins and pads. In normal use, the pins may sometimes benefit from being pressed/cycled a few times, especially when new, but they should not be jammed or unreliable out of the box.

I’m going to follow up by email so we can identify the affected pieces and get replacements sent. We appreciate the technical notes; this is exactly the kind of feedback that helps us improve the product.

    Very Fun

I bought a few starter packs for my boys and the expansion for me. It's definitely a higher level skill. I'm only half-way through the book but I'm having a blast.

    Excellent addition

Being in a STEM field I was immediately obsessed with the SparkBlocks concept, and am so glad we backed to a level that included the expansion kit! Very basic components are in the intro but if you do any work with circuitry, you’re going to need this. I loved how the instructions are clear on the basics and then how to use the blocks to illustrate the concepts. I even brought them to coworkers who thought they could be useful at introducing concepts to our post-secondary students getting into the trade too.

Thanks, Melinda! I'm especially glad to hear that the Expansion Kit is useful for someone with a STEM background. yep - SparkBlocks make circuitry more tangible, and it's a big part of what we’re working on! Thanks for sharing with your team - hopefully they also get a chance to build themselves, as well as with their students! Feel free to share future block / functionality as well as set ideas with us. 👍 Thanks for backing us and for sharing this!

    Lots of Fun!

These are great. We have a 9yr old and 6yr old who have both had lego robotics experience. This kit has been a bit hard to figure out but we have been finding the Youtube content to be helpful!

Thanks, Jeremy! Good to know it took a bit of figuring out even with prior LEGO robotics experience, and that the YouTube content filled in the gaps - if you haven't already, our own video series at https://sparkblocks.ca/learn covers a lot of the same ground too.

A tool for years to come!

My 9yo has been building with Lego for years and this really expanded his imagination and ability to create things. I didn’t have to troubleshoot, he figured it all out from the manuals and quickly did the projects and moved onto personal creations. It would be cool to have a spark locks forum for builds to be shared among users.

We have other younger kids and this will be a learning tool for many years to come.

Thanks, KW! We love hearing that your 9-year-old was able to jump in with the manuals and then start creating his own builds. And we agree - a place to share builds and ideas would be pretty great, and we do have that on the roadmap, believe me! Once we get the broader platform launched (more SparkBlocks, etc.) - then it'll be amazing to see what people come up with!
