Yes. SparkBlocks use standard studs, so they click onto common building bricks and common bricks click onto them. No adapters, no special baseplate.

Both directions
The blocks take bricks on top and sit on bricks underneath, so a SparkBlock can go anywhere in a model rather than only on the bottom layer. That is the point of the system. The electronics are meant to disappear into whatever your child was already building.
How many bricks come in the box
Each kit ships the electronics plus enough plain bricks for the official builds in that kit, and no more. The Intro to Circuits Kit is light on bricks because its six builds are small. The Theme Builds carry more, because a fire truck needs more of them.
Most families use their own collection to go further, and the kits are designed on that assumption. If there are no bricks in the house at all, the official builds will still work, but the first "now build your own thing" moment will come up short.
Other brick brands
If you build with something other than LEGO bricks, it depends on the specific pieces. Standard studs mate fine. Anything with a different stud size or a proprietary clip may not. Send a photo or a link to info@sparkblocks.ca and we will give you a straight answer for the pieces you actually own.
An honest word about grip
Some SparkBlocks grip more tightly than others, and a few blocks in the first production run grip less well than they should. If yours keep falling apart, that is a known thing rather than something you are doing wrong, and there are workarounds, including pinning the smaller connector blocks down from above with a plain brick.
