What you'll build

This Theme Build provides step-by-step instructions for one motorized walking ant. The high-torque gearbox motor drives a leg linkage, so the ant walks rather than rolls. Follow the word-free assembly diagrams, then take it apart and invent your own variations using the same components.

What's included
  • ~200 assorted building bricks
  • 1× High-Torque N20 Motor
  • 1× Wire Block (1×2)
  • Word-free step-by-step build instructions

Electronic components come from your Intro to Circuits Kit.

Ages & difficulty

Designed for ages 8 and up. Word-free assembly diagrams keep younger builders independent; older builders can dig into how the circuit works.

LEGO compatibility

Every block uses the standard 8mm stud spacing, so this build clicks onto LEGO, DUPLO (with a base plate), and most major brick brands.

"Screen Free Learning, compact and affordable"

We just got our Spark Blocks kit and just was so worth it. Our almost 7 year old was self motivated to start building the second he opened the box. no bribing required.

"A perfect family activity!"

The kit was easy to use, engaging, and I was floored at the diverse ways you could execute different designs. Even for a toddler, she was highly engaged in the building and circuit activation.

Frequently asked

Do I need the Intro Kit to build this?

Yes. Theme Builds use the electronic components from the Intro to Circuits Kit. If you don't have it yet, add the Intro Kit first. This build then puts those same components into a new shape.

What ages is this for?

Designed for ages 8 and up. Word-free assembly diagrams keep younger builders independent; older builders dig into how the circuit works.

Does it really work with LEGO?

Yes. Every SparkBlock uses the standard 8mm stud spacing and clicks onto LEGO, DUPLO (with a base plate), and most major brick brands.

Do I need an app, computer, or Wi-Fi?

No. SparkBlocks are deliberately screen-free. Everything you need is in the printed assembly guide.

    Coolest Ant

My 9 year old son was able to follow the directions and build the ant himself. The instruction were well written with good diagrams to follow. He was able to go back through the instruction to trouble-shoot shoot his build when it didnt work right off. I love all of the skills this build has taught him. He took the ant to school. His classmates loved it. When his cousin broke his build he was able to follow the plans to repair it. We love the sparkblocks kits and add-ons they are so fun and help foster learning with play.

Hi Heather, this is so fun to see. The fact that your son could follow the plans, troubleshoot, and repair on his own is so powerful for us to read ab out! That “fix it when it breaks” confidence is real engineering.

And take it to school?! Love this! ⚡

Let him know we love the look of his ant! 🙂 And of course... he can customize it with more bricks, however he likes!

    Thanks for sharing!

An impressive toy ant brought to life by Sparkblocks!

Some simple yet very creative mechanics makes the ant walk from the input of one motor! The battery box and various sparkblocks are well hidden inside the model.

Here it is combined with more parts from the intro kit!

Truly a great first experience with the Sparkblocks system!

Seeing the “as designed” build and the remixed version with a second motor, fan, and lights is so cool... I'm so glad you thought to try mixing parts across kits. Thanks for sharing both versions! ⚡🐜

    Lots of fun

Mt 10 year-old couldn't wait to build his ant. When it wouldn't turn on the first time, he was able to identify the problem himself and fix it, and he's been thrilled with the result. He's been playing with it now for a couple of weeks, making obstacle courses for it. Overall, it's been a very fun project, and it's great that it's got him thinking about how the circuit is working as well.

The ant can be tricky one - it's a long (but basic) circuit - so happy to hear that he dug in, troubleshot (troubleshooted?!) it himself and got the reward. Those moments are what I strive for with my kids and all builders! Can't wait to see his obstacle courses - any chance you'd share some clips / a montage on our community page (free)? Walking Ant

Got this for my grandsons 9th birthday. His dad said getting the circuits going was a bit tricky at first but it’s going great now!

Thanks, Jan! Glad the circuits clicked into place after a bit of troubleshooting - the Ant's a fun one once it's up and walking.
